‘Ennio il Maestro’, by Giuseppe Tornatore, deepens the long and inspired friendship of the musician with Sergio Leone

Marco Morricone conversation via Zoom, from Rome, with the report by Estadio. He is the son of Ennio Morricone and Maria Travia, and the subject could not be otherwise. Giuseppe Tornatore’s documentary about his father – Ennio the Master -, which integrates the programming of the ninth edition of 8 1/2 Italian film festival. The film will be screened on Sunday 31st, at 4 pm, at the Espaço Itaú Augusta.

How about starting with your parents’ love story? “They were very young when they met, in 1950. They married in 1956 and stayed together until his death. Mum has always been the first listener of dad’s compositions. She collaborated on the research and on the lyrics. It was a beautiful story. ‘love”.

Before becoming a doc, Morricone’s collaboration with Tornatore gave life to a book released in Italy by HarperCollins in 2018 – Ennio Morricone / Giuseppe Tornatore – Conversation. The first chapter has a suggestive and revealing title. “Inspiration doesn’t exist.” Ennio believed in work. He dreamed of being a doctor, but his father, a trumpeter, directed him to music. Father of a family, with wife and children to support, he approached the audiovisual. The calls of the woman led him to play in the RAI orchestra. He composed the score for The Bible, At the beginning, by John Huston. “Mum did all the research at the synagogue in Rome to ensure the authenticity of the trace, including the lyrics.”

Cooperation

The great partnership was with Sergio Leone, in spaghetti westerns. In the doc, Raffaela, the director’s daughter, says that Morricone’s music is the true dialogue of films, and it’s true. Morricone created the coyote howl brand for Leone. “It was only much later in life that my father realized, as Nicola Piovani says in the film, that the music in films is contemporary music, that of our time”. Di Tornatore, he says that he “had all the freedom to make the film he wanted”. And his father created for him «one of the most beautiful paths of him, that of Paradise cinema“.

The reporter remembers a concert at the Municipal of Rio. Interviewed by Estadão, Morricone sat on the stairs talking as people arrived. “Dad was just like that. Besides being the great artist everyone recognizes, he was the best father we could have had.”
