From New Order to the LCD Soundsystem.
When the time period in which a series or movie takes place is one of the most important things about it, it is essential to have the correct details of the time. In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, David Harbor revealed that ‘Stranger Things”s secret weapon in some of this intricacy was actually his fellow star Winona Ryder. “She would tell them, ‘This song actually came out in ’85, and you guys have it in ’83,'” little details they didn’t even know about and had to change the script based on that.” It’s a bit surprising that it went this far that the star of the show had to make those corrections, but they’re good changes to make anyway!
Like ‘Stranger Things,’ Amazon Prime Video’s new sci-fi series ‘Paper Girls,’ based on the acclaimed comic book series by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang, features characters from the 1980s. But where ‘Stranger Things’ stays stationary and linear on its way through the decade of ‘Ghostbusters’ and Kate Bush, ‘Paper Girls’ doesn’t take long before traveling to the recent past, in 2019. And that means a lot of confused characters who love the Danzig band meet other confused characters who love the Dave Matthews Band.
The music of ‘Paper Girls’ is essential not only to establish a subtext about who these new characters are and what kind of music they feel and express themselves with, but also a good way to make clear how much the worlds around them have changed. . Even “hip” music can go from the New Order synth to the (newer!) LCD Soundsystem synth. It’s the same… but different, a theme common to almost everything on ‘Paper Girls’.
Without further ado, here’s what you’ve come for: The Time Traveling ‘Paper Girls’ Season 1 Complete Soundtrack!
