‘The House of the Dragon’: Its creators talk about the ‘Lord of the Rings’ series

The two most anticipated fantasy series of recent years will coincide on the air, and the creators of the ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off are looking forward to it.

Until now it was said that, just as Star Wars broke the popular mainstream barrier in cinematographic science fiction, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ removed the “minority” label from fantasy films (medieval fantasy, if we put punctilious). Stark Trek had to do the same thing on television with sci-fi and, many years later, ‘Game of Thrones’. Before the series that adapted the novels of George RR. Martin, fantasy had never been a truly leading series, let alone an adult one. Its success was such that more than with a series it was compared to ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

Ironies of life and media history, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ and ‘The House of the Dragon’, a spin-off in the form of a ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel, will coincide on the air. The first will arrive on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, while the second will arrive on HBO a little earlier, on August 22. That is to say, the comparisons will be more numerous than ever and, coinciding in time and a half, more justified.

Those responsible for ‘The House of the Dragon’, Ryan Gondal and Miguel Sapochnik, have talked about it with TheHollywood Reporter, and they believe that this competition will be healthy for everyone. Gondal states:

My hope is that both series work out and find a huge fan base and that there is a lot of overlap in that fan base. I think the more big, expensive, really expensive fantasies that work on TV, the better for us, the fans, because they’ll do more of them. I desperately want ‘The Rings of Power’ to work too. I’ll be there watching it. The first night it’s available, I’ll see you all.

Sapochnik, the director of all the chapters of this miniseries and the author of masterful Game of Thrones episodes such as ‘The Winds of Winter’ or ‘The Battle of Winterfell’, also spoke about it, although somewhat less enthusiastically.

‘The Lord of the Rings’ is great intellectual property and great material. I have no idea what they’ve done, I didn’t get past the first of ‘The Hobbit’, but fantastic. The more the better really.

Both ‘The Rings of Power’ and ‘House of the Dragon’ take place centuries before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’, respectively. However, the immortality of the elves will make us see characters like Galadriel in the second and a surprise appearance, for example Melisandre, is not ruled out. Both will be, and in this we agree with the protagonists of the article, a joy for fantasy fans.
