The animation “DC League of Superpets” debuted in first place at the US and Canadian box office with 23 million dollars grossed in 4,313 theaters.
Despite the benefit, this is a very modest start for a $ 90 million budget production. Although Krypto and the superpets are not as famous as Batman or Superman, their opening was far below the expectations generated by their connection with DC Comics. And even more so for bringing stars like Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart as voice actors for the central characters.
The median performance reflects the irregularity of children’s box office outings since the start of the pandemic. “DC League of Superpets” also followed Pixar’s “Lightyear,” which was considered underwhelming and still opened with $ 51 million at home.
The one exception among the pandemic’s children’s productions is Universal’s “Minions 2: Rise of Gru,” which grossed $ 107 million on its North American debut. The rest is in line with DC animation: “Mean Guys” ($ 23.9 million), “Sing 2” ($ 22.3 million) and Disney’s “Enchantment” ($ 27 million).
In addition to other markets, the cartoon reached $ 41.4 million globally.
The good news is that “DC League of Superpets” has pleased critics (71% approval on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences (CinemaScore’s “A-” rating) and won’t have much competition between previews in the coming weeks, which could keep a good collection by extending his stay on the poster.
With the animation protagonist, “No! Don’t look!” dropped to number 2 with $ 18.5 million raised from 3,807 theaters. So far, director Jordan Peele’s new fantasy film has generated $ 80.5 million in North America before making its international debut. The launch in Brazil is only scheduled for 25 August.
“Thor: Love and Thunder” hit # 3 and, after completing its fourth weekend in theaters, surpassed $ 300 million domestically and $ 662.4 million worldwide.
“Minions 2: Rise of Gru” hits number 4 on its fifth weekend, surpassing $ 320 million to become the fifth largest North American release of 2022. With the international sum, it reaches $ 710.3 million.
The largest launch of the year in the US maintains an excellent performance in 5th place. After 10 weekends, “Top Gun: Maverick” is still in the Top 5 of the chart, down just 17% from the previous week. Thanks to this continuity, the film with Tom Cruise reached an impressive $ 650 million in the United States and Canada and $ 1.3 billion worldwide.
The week had just one more debut: the dark comedy “Vengeance”, directed by BJ Novak, which, with just $ 1.75 million from 998 screens, took 10th place. On the other hand, it got a 77% critical approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.
