Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Sergio Leone’s Western masterpiece.
After the success of A Fistful of Dollars and a few more dollars, the directors of the production company United Artists contacted screenwriter Luciano Vincenzo to acquire the rights to his future projects. The latter then offers Sergio Leone a new screenplay that follows three scoundrels in search of treasure during a civil war. Touching on the subject of someone who experienced the war as a child in Italy, the director denounces its absurdity while demystifying the title’s three adjectives: the good, the bad and the ugly.
Considered the quintessence of the “Spaghetti Western”, the latter concludes Sergio Leone’s “Dollar Trilogy” in style. Amoral and baroque at will, it is based in particular on the unforgettable performances of the three main actors – Clint Eastwood (Le Bon) as the phlegmatic and arrogant game hunter; Lee Van Cleef (Rough) as a ruthless mercenary; and Eli Wallach (Le Truand), a newcomer to the world of film-making, as a clumsy and funny bandit – on Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack (and especially the two-note main theme, inspired by the cry of the hyena that became famous), or even in the emblematic final scene of the three-way duel (a real tour de force for the director who enjoys multiplying the frame values so that the start of the long-awaited shots can be delayed).
on its production, The good, the bad and the ugly It quickly became a huge success around the world. In Italy it brings in more than 2 billion lire, and in France it brings in 6.3 million! Averaged 4.5 out of 5 by AlloCiné interns, this is one of Sergio Leone’s best films.ex aequo together once in the West and once in America).
