While filming the dream sequence of the Coen brothers’ classic, the actor was the victim of an unexpected prank — with the help of his own family

The actor Jeff Bridges (Tron: Ares) revealed, during an interview with the program Conana curious — and somewhat embarrassing — story about the behind-the-scenes of one of the most iconic scenes in The Big Lebowski (1998), classic of Coen brothers.

The sequence in question is the famous “Gutterballs” dream, in which your character, The Dudeimagine yourself in a musical number inspired by Busby Berkeley films, surrounded by dancers with bowling props. When skating across the set, the character passes under the dancers’ skirts — and it was precisely during the rehearsal for this shot that the actor received a big surprise.

Bridges He said that, while testing the movement with his Widelux camera in hand, he noticed something strange: “I look up and see… tufts of hair coming out of the leotard. I thought: ‘Okay…’. I moved on to the next one and there were even more. The next one was a whole forest”, laughed the actor.

What Bridges What he didn’t know was that it was all just a prank designed by the makeup team — and with the complicity of his own family. The actor had brought his wife to the set, Susan Gestonand her three young daughters (around 7 to 9 years old at the time), without imagining that they would be part of the game. “It was a terrible mistake”, he said, between laughs, remembering the embarrassment of the moment.

Second Bridgesthe “hairs” were made of crepe hair, a material used for theatrical characterizations. The surprise was great, but the reaction ended up becoming a recurring joke among production colleagues. Today, the actor cherishes the episode — and even published the photo taken that day on his official website, JeffBridges.com, along with other images he took during filming.
