Released in France on May 6, 1998, Event Horizon was a terrible failure that attracted only 185,000 spectators. Internationally, the sanction is the same: $ 26 million has been collected for a budget rated at 60 million. However, this work of science fiction is the best film by its director, Paul Waterson, known for its live adaptation of Resident Evil Saga.

“The space is infinite, so is terror.”

Laurence Fishburne, Kathleen Quinlan and Sam Neill, Event Horizon will lead us in 2047. Lewis & Clark Spaceship is preparing to return to its base when its crew gets a new mission command: go to the Daylight Station to get a physicist William Weaver.

They have to return to Neptune together. A few years earlier, Virir developed a revolutionary ship that could travel faster than the light, the horizon of the event that was mysterious on the first flight on the outskirts of the planet. Lewis & Clark’s mission is to determine the waste of the event horizon, to realize the causes of its disappearance and the search for possible survivors.

With its atmosphere of shimmering and alien, between science fiction, fantasy and horror, the horizon of the event is a true precious stone of the genre. This is more surprising when we know the director behind this project, a certain Paul WS Anderson, who often mocked his action nonsense, such as Resident Evil, Monster Hunter or three musketeers.

“In space, no one will hear you scream”

Welcome to space

A kind of disturbing and influential spatial camera, the horizon of the event is clearly distinguished for its dark and oppressive atmosphere, but it is especially valuable for the crushing performances of its main actors: Lauren Fishburn and Sam Neil.

The latter, from his role, as a paleontologist from Juras Park, is completely populated by the character of his mad scientist. In addition to being inspired by Shining and Alien, Event Horizon also reminds Hellraiser, which shines in the shade of shiny tension.

In addition, the event horizon relies on metaphysical and supernatural horrors, as well as reports such as HP Lovecraft or Edgar Allan Poe. In this sense, aesthetically, the film borrowed more from Gothic (arches, red lights, religious symbols), where a stranger is more industrial and organic.

Anyway, if you like the genre, go to Paramount+ on Event Horizon!
