Twenty -one humanoid robots joined thousands of corridors at the half -marathon of Yizhuang in Beijing on Saturday, the first time these machines ran alongside humans in a 21 km course.
Chinese producers, such as Droidup and Noietix Robotics, were of all shapes and sizes, about 1.2 m, others up to 1.8 m high. A society boasted that its robot seemed almost human, with female characteristics and the ability to slam the eyelids and smile.
Some companies tested the robots for weeks before the race. The Beijing authorities described the event as more similar to a car competition in execution, given the need for engineering and navigation teams.
“The robots are working very well, very stable … I feel that I am witnessing the evolution of robot and ai,” said the viewer that Sishu, who works with artificial intelligence.
The robots were accompanied by human coaches, some of whom had to give physical support to the machines during the race.
Some robots wore racing sneakers, one of them wore boxing gloves and another wore a red progress with the words “destined to win” in Chinese.
The winning robot was Tiangong Ultra, from the Beijing Innovation Center of Human Robotics, with a time of 2 hours and 40 minutes. The male winner of the race recorded a time of 1 hour and 2 minutes.
Tang Jian, director of the Robotics Center technology, said that Tiangong Ultra’s performance has been assisted by long legs and an algorithm that allows him to imitate the way humans manage a marathon.
Some robots, like Tiangong Ultra, completed the race, while others had difficulty from the beginning. A robot fell on the starting line and lay for a few minutes before getting up and resuming the race. One of them hit a handrail after racing a few meters, causing the fall of his human operator.
Although humanoid robots appeared in marathons in China last year, this is the first time they run next to humans.
