New Orleans. A group of friends from the LGBTQ+ community had their lives changed after the tragedy.
Queer as Folk, a series created by Stephen Dunn with Finn Argus, Candice Grace, Jesse James Keitel, Ryan O’Connell… is available on Starzplay and the Canal+ Series SVOD offering.
It will be 23 years since the creation of Queer as Folk under the talented, funny and charming pen of Russell T. Davies and 22 years since its adaptation in the American version, which will run for five seasons. And we owe this reboot to Stephen Dunn, a young Canadian director who burst onto the independent film world in 2015 with Closet Monster.
A new series, new decor and a new atmosphere, as explained by Devin Way, who plays Brody in the series: “The series takes place in New Orleans instead of England. It’s an ultra-bright, musical vision where all cultures come together. The spirit of this city is so electric.
This new version of the show is more inclusive than ever, representing the society we live in today with the full spectrum of LGBTQ people in the community.“
Despite this radical change in scenery, this new version still maintains a basic tone with the original series. “Some of the roles remind you of characters you might meet in another version of the series. It is also a reflection of the functioning of the queer community, where everyone appeals to everyone“, confirms Johnny Sybil, who plays the role of Noah.
The characters in this new version are all colorful and reflect the full spectrum of the LGBTQ+ community. “Our series continues the tradition of the best representation of the LGBTQ community, as this show did in the 2000s. I think the vocabulary has grown to define who we are in this society.says Finn Argus, who plays Mingus.
The series also features a famous face for fans of the series. It’s Ryan O’Connell, who plays Julian here, but who had his own series on Netflix, a special that he was the creator and main character of. It tells the story of a young disabled gay man looking for love. He also sees this reset against the background of a much more open era:
The difference with this version of Queer is that all the actors in the show are LGBTQ. This would not have been the case twenty years ago with the launch of this format.
This Queer as Folk 2022 takes on a much more tragic dimension than the previous two, as this time the issue of violence against queer people is openly discussed with a shooting at a gay club, as well as the Pulse attack in Orlando in 2016.
The characters then suffer various injuries and must undergo reconstruction. This return to life is less about psychoanalytic sessions than actual panic attacks and less about traditional treatment that moves from drug use to body use.
Ultimately, this new Queer as Folk tells bigger and different stories. The series manages to create a narrative that is far stranger than its predecessors and deeply rooted in its time.
