The death of Pope Francis at the age of 88 promises to move the news for the next few weeks. The first non -European Pope in 1,300 years had a great impact within the Catholic Church – and leaves a rich legacy.
Starting from the choice of the name. The Argentine Jorge Mario Bergoglio said Francis chosen there (the first in history) because he wanted to make a “poor and poor” church. And in fact, he conducted a very simple life in front of the Vatican, unlike many of his predecessors. But more important than that, Francisco managed to take the promise of the role and made the church more inclusive, which annoyed the ultra conservatives.
Francis opened the doors of the Church and declared, more than once, that God loves everyone, including the most vulnerable and fragile. And this list includes the poor, but also immigrants, refugees and the LGBTQIAP+community.
Francisco also put women in important positions within the Vatican and has authorized the lay people so called, since baptized, departments in the lead within the parishes. Francisco’s papacy was also marked by the pontiff’s attempt to restore the credibility of a church in relation to the scandals of sexual abuse.
An important inheritance that we will help you remember not only in this text, but with a series of films that portray the trajectory of this fan of San Lorenzo who has become one of the most popd popds in history.

Francisco was one of the Popes who traveled the most in history: he lost only John Paul II. And this documentary by Gianfranco Rosi deals with these paths. The work of 2022 was very successful at the Venice Festival and shows a series of international visits to the Pontiff. Even the premiere of the film, the Pope had already made 37 trips to 53 countries, where he met state leaders, but also with ordinary faithful.
This documentary is all in Italian and, unfortunately, it is not available here in Brazil.
The next option in the list is the youngest work of all. Made with young and young people. The Spanish journalist Jordi Évole shot a meeting of Francis with Catholics from all over the world and ask for things sensitive to the Catholic Church, but which are relevant for the current generation.
For those who have the image of the inclusive Pope, this documentary is very useful, as it shows that Francisco is positioned on gender identity, sexuality and religious freedom.
It is a star+ production and, therefore, is available in Disney+.
The last in the list does not speak exactly of Francisco, but brings a good portrait of what will happen in the next few days. The election of the next Pope is called Conclave, exactly the title of the work.
Edward Berger’s film tells the story of Camerlengo, a character by Ralph Fiennes who is responsible for conducting the controversy and transition.
For many cinematographic critics, they are on the list of last year’s best films. It is interesting to note that the story is imaginary, even if I do not doubt that all the joints and politics are true.
You can watch Conclave node Amazon Prime Video.
