Pontiff will be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
The tomb of Pope Francis in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the main Marian temple of Rome, can be visited by the public from next Sunday (27), one day after the burial of the body of the leader of the Catholic Church.
The information was confirmed on Thursday (24) by the director of the Vatican press room, Matteo Bruni, who provided details on the site.
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was a personal choice of Jorge Bergoglio, who had a great admiration for the Virgin Mary and had a long time since the times of the Cardinal. His decision, however, makes him the first pontiff to be buried outside the walls of the Vatican by Leo XIII in 1903.
According to the Holy See, Jorge Bergoglio’s tomb follows the Argentine guidelines, expressed in his will and will only have the “Francesco” inscription and the reproduction of his pectoral cross.
In addition, the tomb was prepared on the nave of the lateral ship between Paolina’s chapel and the chapel of the Basilica Sforza, and is located near the altar of San Francisco, according to the desire of the Holy Father.
Finally, the Vatican revealed that the tomb is made of marble from Liguria, land of the ancestors of Francis.
Leader of the Catholic Church since March 2013, Bergoglio died last Monday (21), at the age of 88, victim of a cardiovascular arrest due to a stroke after more than two months of battle against a serious pneumonian. His body is veiled in the Basilica of San Pietro until next Friday (25), one day before the burial. .
