Singer Cyndi Lauper has signed on to play a recurring role in “The Horror of Dolores Roach,” a series in development on Amazon Prime Video.
Produced by Blumhouse Television, GloNation and Spotify, the series stars Justina Machado (“One Day at a Time”). The plot follows the actress’s character, Dolores Roach, who is released from prison after 16 years and returns to the Latin American neighborhood of Washington Heights, New York, with only $ 200 and clothes on. Long out of touch with her family, Dolores reunites with a stoned old friend, Luis, who gives her room and board and gives her massages for cash in the basement under her run-down empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, “Magic Hands Dolores” is pushed to shocking extremes to survive.
Lauper will play Ruthie, a Broadway theater receptionist who works as a private investigator and causes trouble for the protagonist.
Alejandro Hernandez (“New Amsterdam”) plays Luis and the cast also includes Kita Updike (“Misandria”), K. Todd Freeman (“Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events”), Marc Maron (“GLOW”), Jean Yoon (“Kim’s Convenience”), Judy Reyes (“Claws”) and Jeffery Self (“Search Party”).
The series is based on a podcast of the same name and was adapted by Aaron Mark (“Commentary”), who wrote and directed the original podcast, and Dara Resnik (creator of “Home Before Dark”). Production has Gloria Calderón Kellett (“One day at a time”) and Roxann Dawson (“Overcoming – The Miracle of Faith”), who also direct the pilot.
