Prohibition of screens: it is not a punishment, it is attentive to the health of the eyes

It is necessary to limit the use of screens to avoid problems such as eye pain, the feeling of exhaustion, difficulty in focus and productivity

The use of screens is a danger to the physical, metal and eye health of children. Keeping rigid control is the best gift to your child’s health!

The Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) recommends caution regarding the ideal of the “screen time” for the childish population, highlighting the risks associated with the excessive use of digital devices. Among the impacts caused there are difficulties in learning, delays in development, difficulty on fire, dependence, irritability, eye problems, sleep disorders, among others. Most of these symptoms are directly related to the screen viewing syndrome (or artificial vision syndrome, SVC), the result of the excessive eye effort and prolonged exposure to blue light emitted by these devices, which overloads the muscles of the eyes, influencing sleep and increasing the risk of visual and emotional discomfort.

The danger of screens for vision

Among the most common symptoms of the syndrome are the dry and irritated eyes caused by the reduction of the flashing frequency focusing on the screen for long periods, the blurred or frequent cloudy vision, deriving from constant visual effort and fatigue of the eyes, characterized by the sensation of tiredness or weight in the eyes. The headache, especially in the front and around the eyes, the sensitivity to light (photophobia) and the difficulty on fire, which occur when alternate between the screen and the distant objects, are other characteristic signs of this condition.

Although the screen viewing syndrome is common, it can be avoided with some simple practices. The “Rule 20-20-20” technique is one of the most used to reduce eye fatigue. It consists of, every 20 minutes of use of the screen, looks an object 6 meters away for at least 20 seconds.

Ophthalmologist Álvaro Dantas, an expert in vision icon, describes in detail other means to prevent eye fatigue. According to him, it is necessary to incorporate preventive measures into the routine of use of the screens to become daily habits. “The adjustment of the lighting of the screen, the contrast and size of the text can contribute to greater visual comfort. These measurements avoid the excessive shine of the eyes and the reflections in the environment. If necessary, it is interesting to use artificial tears (hills) to relieve the dryness of the eyes. Furthermore, always maintain a suitable position to prevent neck and shoulder tensions.”

Increase in the use of screens by children

According to the Regional Center for Studies for the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br), the use of the Internet among children has increased considerably in recent years. In 2015, only 9% of children from 0 to 2 years used the network, while in 2024 this number rose to 44%.

Excessive use of the Internet among children has become increasingly common. The World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that less than 1/4 of children under the age of 2 and only 1/3 of children between 2 and 5 years follow the time limits of the recommended screen. The ophthalmologist describes in detail the effects of excessive use, not only on children and young people, but also on adults and the elderly:

“Excessive use of the canvas leads to eye pain, it can lead to a sense of exhaustion, making concentration and productivity difficult. Sleep disorders are also connected to these sensations, as well as sleep deprivation. They can cause problems of anxiety, irritation and attention.”.

The data of Cetic.br, collected in 2023, reveal that the possession of cell phones by the infantile population has increased, especially among children aged between 3 and 5 years (from 6%to 20%) and from 6 to 8 years (from 18 to 36%) compared to 2015. This situation reflects an increasing exposure to the world of figures …
