Italian lives in a nursing home for former Portici in Bologna
Between affection, estimates, a small request and many prayers, in view of the conclave, the Italian cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi has a group of special and long-standing supporters: religious born under the pound X (1922-1939) and Pius XII (1939-1958).
The group of supporters of the religious is the first pay that lives with him at the Clerus house, through Barberia, where the archbishop chose to live when Pope Francis promoted him to lead the Catholic Church of Bologna 10 years ago.
“If I saw him look at from that window to the square of San Pietro as the new Pope, he would be happy because we know what kind of person it is, but also sad because we will not have it here with us”, I trust Dom Franco, who has a room on the same floor of Zuppi in the nursing home.
“Those who enter as Pope, come out as the cardinal. I must say that they have seen many conclusions, but we have never been successful,” added the elderly with a good mood.
The building located in the historic center of Bologna is a accommodation for retired priests and religious elderly people. Among the 26 who live in space, many of them are sick or need a help by wheelchair. The former arcades say they see Zupi very little during the day.
“He works a lot and is rather busy. Usually, he wakes up early, he starts before 6 and often by bicycle, and he returns late, after 23:00. Zupi is a family member. He feels here and he is at home with his priests, I can say that this place is like a refuge for him. When he can, he has lunch with us on Sunday.
Last Sunday, when Zuppi returned from Rome after Francisco’s funeral, the religious had lunch with his elderly friends in the café of the reaction house. One of them confided that the cardinal was “calm and interested in everyone’s opinions”.
“He arrives and brings all his energy, encouraging the atmosphere,” said Dom Sandro, while Dom Gianluigi Nuvoli joked by saying that Zupi “speaks a lot and eats little”.
The elderly of the Clerus house continued to make praise to the illustrious resident of the building. One of the religious declared that “would be very happy” if Zuppi became the new leader of the Catholic Church.
“It has extraordinary qualities to be a Pope: great ease in communicating and in relation to people, he has much serenity and simplicity in his freedom,” said Franco.
Dom Silvano, on the other hand, is one of those who sleep little and usually in the morning at 5:45, it is already sitting in front of the stairs, in the room of the building, ready for breakfast.
“I see Cardinal Zuppi descends, he comes to me, embraces me and leaves. I am sure he will receive many votes on the conclave. And if this happens, I will have a pope as a friend,” he said.
