Who was Jean Charles de Menezes and what is your connection with London?

Jean Charles de Menezes was born in Gonzaga, Minas Gerais, on January 7, 1978. Son of a simple family, he showed talent for electronics at the beginning and, at 14, he moved to Sao Paulo to study.

In 2002, he traveled in the United Kingdom with a Student Visa and decided to stay in London, where he worked as an electrician and lived with two cousins.

On July 22, 2005, two weeks after the terrorist attacks who killed 52 people from public transport in London, metropolitan police officers confused Jean with terrorist Hussain Osman and shot him at the Stockwell station.

They shot seven shots in the head and one on the shoulder at close range while working under the guideline of the Kratos-An Anti-Terrorism Protocol operation authorizing the use of lethal force without notice.

Initially the authorities said Jean fled the police approach. However, the images of investigations and security cameras showed that it arrived calmly in the station, denying the official version. Days later, Scotland Yard recognized the error, but the court did not consider police officers responsible.

What happened later?

Jean Charles’ death caused indignation all over the world. In Brazil, the government declared “shocked and perplexed” and required explanations. In the United Kingdom, public events and reports of the British and international media have accused justice.

The authorities conducted two investigations: one decided not to sue the police, while the other criticized the failures of the communication and the command of the operation. The British charges sued the Metropolitan Police and the Court sentenced the company to pay a fine of £ 175,000 per negligence.

The British government has compensated for the Menezes family at £ 100,000, considered low compared to other cases judged simultaneously.

The decision not to sue the agents was also supported in the European Court of Human Rights, which generated even more revolt. The police admitted the error, but no direct punishment was applied to the people involved.

In 2010, they opened a memorial in their honor at the Stockwell station.
