Portrayed by Andy Serkis in the Peter Jackson trilogy, Smeagol (aka Gollum) is a fallen hobbit who absorbs the power of the one ring that has kept him in his possession for centuries. old age

Exactly 579 years have passed since Gollum walked through Middle Earth. Indeed, when he discovered the ring on his 23rd birthday, he spent the next centuries in the Misty Mountains admiring his gem, whose power allowed him to continue his existence almost indefinitely. After remaining in possession of the Ring for about 500 years, it was stolen by Bilbo, Frodo’s uncle.

Help!

In the 1960s, the Beatles briefly considered adapting Tolkien’s works for the movies themselves. A project that they even presented to Stanley Kubrick, who refused. When the film saw the light of day, four musicians shared different roles in the story: Frodo for Paul McCartney, Sammy for Ringo Starr, Gandalf for George Harrison, and Gollum for John Lennon.

technical performance

Gollum is one of the first characters in cinema to be created using performance capture techniques: a revolutionary invention sublimated by the talent of Andy Serkis. Initially approached by Peter Jackson for the vocal interpretation of the character, after just 3 weeks of recording, Serkis eventually joined the set, donning a suit equipped with sensors to mimic Smeagol’s movements, on set with the cast, and then in a studio called “The Volume”.
