Better Call Saul Season 6: This Tribute to Breaking Bad Fans Loved in Episode 11

It’s not a surprise strictly speaking, as the producer has already confirmed it: Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, respectively Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, appeared in the eleventh episode of the final season of Better Call Saul, with a subtle title. “Breaking Bad”. Before them, other emblematic characters of the cult program appeared in this prequel series, such as Gus Fring, Mike Ehrmantraut or even Hank Schrader.

If this episode confirmed to us that Jesse really escaped from the police (as it was already shown to us in the movie El Camino) after the sacrifice of Walter, the two characters also appeared in the flesh in time. By two associates of crooked lawyer Saul Goodman (real name Jimmy McGill) in the second season of Breaking Bad.

In this case, many easter eggs were included in the series aimed at the most die-hard Breaking Bad fans, such as the crystal blue meth lab, the hoods that Jesse and Walter wore to (falsely) hide their identities from Saul, or either of them. Jessie’s favorite insult: “dick” (“Conn**d” in French).

In an interview with our colleagues varietyEpisode director Thomas Schnauze revealed that he almost included Jesse’s famous “Beach”, a detail that ended up not being kept in the final version of the script because the judgment “too forced”. The latter also explained why it was decided not to rejuvenate the two actors, who were necessarily older than when filming the TV series Breaking Bad (broadcast from 2008 to 2013):

We don’t do a lot of rejuvenation in the series. We put makeup on their faces, but there was no way Aaron looked like the 18-year-old kid Jessie was at the time. (…) When you watch Better Call Saul, you forget what the characters looked like, but when you edit the scenes one after another, you realize, for example, how much Jonathan (Banks, who plays Mike’s editor note), who I am. He imagined that he has the same face as in Breaking Bad, his appearance has changed.

Due to the busy schedules of the two actors, this scene was written and filmed before the production of episode 11, while filming of the second episode of season 6 was underway. The series universe Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul did not, according to director Thomas Schnauze, need some reference to the game to immerse themselves in the emotional state of their characters (Better Call Saul’s flashback sequence takes place in season 2 of Breaking Bad, at a very specific point in the series).
