Warner decided not to release “Batgirl,” despite the approximately $ 90 million production cost, after the film didn’t fare well in audience testing.
The production starring Leslie Grace was supposed to debut directly on the HBO Max streaming platform, but according to the The casingWarner Bros. Discovery chose to shelve production, preventing it from becoming a major failure.
The decision came after the audience tests did not satisfy the audience. According to information from Collider, who spoke to people who saw the unfinished version of “Batgirl,” the film was a huge disappointment and seemed like a cheap product compared to other films.
There isn’t much information on “Batgirl”, other than the fact that the film would tie into the DC Extended Universe and would have JK Simmons’ commissioner James Gordon, a role played by the actor in both versions of “Justice League”. Additionally, Michael Keaton, who played Batman in 1989 and 1992, was involved in the project. Now, Keaton should only appear in “The Flash”.
In addition to Leslie Grace, Simmons and Keaton, the cast of “Batgirl” included Brendan Fraser as the villain Firefly, Ivory Aquino as the trans vigilante Alysia Yeoh, as well as Rebecca Front, Corey Johnson and Ethan Kai.
The new direction of the now Warner Bros. Discovery chose to shelve the film, which would be released exclusively on HBO Max. The decision appears to have been motivated by the fact that “Batgirl” had a lower budget than other DC film productions, resulting in lower quality than other superhero movies.
Also, according to THR, the cut of the release of “Batgirl” and the animation “Scoob !: Holiday Haunt” was a measure to cut costs.
“Batgirl” was directed by Adril El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and written by Christina Hodson, who also wrote “Birds of Prey” and “The Flash”. The next DC movie to hit theaters will be “Black Adam” on October 20, followed by “Shazam! Fury of the Gods ”on December 21st.
