“When I got up, I commented on the parish staff: ‘You don’t believe it. I dreamed of Robert dressed everything in white, like a Pope”, Playo, parish priest of the parish of Santa Rita, in the north of San Paolo. When asked if he believed he was a premonitory dream or if he had an average gift, he didn’t assure not. “I have nothing medium (laughs).”

Although Robert was in Brazil a few times, he and Playo met in Rome in 2001, in the so -called general chapter, a meeting in which members of a particular religious order gather to elect the higher general of the institution and his two assistants. In this case, the two belong to the order of Sant’Agostino and participated in many religious activities together, such as missionary performances in the Philippines and South Korea.

Pelayo describes Robert as a “simple”, “humble” and “retract” as a man, for example, by Pope John Paul II (1978-2005), known for having been a talking and communicative leader. However, for him, the most important thing is that the new pontiff brings the Gospel with him and has the mission of spreading the word of Christ.

“When you ask Robert something, he thinks a little before he answered, but he always gives a fantastic answer. He is very intelligent,” he says. “But for me, the most important thing is that Robert is a missionary, someone who wants to bring the Gospel to everyone. At the beginning, he distinguished himself for being a man of vision.”

Pope Leo XIV sent a message to Brazil during the Augustinian congress: “A great joy”:

“I almost fell on the floor”

Although he recognized Robert’s qualities and his commitment to religious life, Playo claims to have been surprised by the Vatican’s decision to choose his friend as a new pope. In addition to being the youngest pontiff of the last 35 years, he was becoming increasingly high positions within the Catholic Church in a short time.

Robert entered religious life in 1977 at the age of 22. In 1982, he was ordained a priest and two years later, he began his missionary performance in Peru -Piura -Stindi in Trujillo, where he remained for ten years.

In 1999, he was elected provincial priority of the Augustinian province “Mother of the Good Council” of Chicago and, two and a half years later, he became a superior general of the order of Sant’Agostino, the position of the highest leadership within the community. It was projected for the assignment in 2007, remaining 12 years at the pole.

“We were waiting for the new Pope to be one of the names they were talking about. When the cardinal said” Robert “, I almost fell to the ground,” he says. “Imagine, a boy you know, your friend, with whom you lived, famous masses, shared meals, had several conversations, suddenly … Pope. You seem so, enthusiastic.”
