Cowboy Mess is a traditional religious ceremony that takes place every year in the city of Serrita, in the Sertão de Pernambuco. In 2025, the mass reached the 55th edition and will take place on 27 July, with the expectation of attracting thousands of faithful, cowboys and tourists.

The tradition of the Cowboy Mass began in 1970, motivated by the confusion generated after the murder of the Cowboy Raimundo Jacob on a serrita site. The initiative came from Adre João Câncio, with the support of Luiz Gonzaga, Pedro Bandeira and Jandhuy Finizola, the latter responsible for the creation of the album Rezas de Sol, converted into a soundtrack of the event symbol.

In this year’s edition, Jandhuy Finizola Jandhuy Finizola will be honored in the form of poetry by the artist Antonio Marinho. Another salient moment of the event will be the presence of Father Antônio Maria, known for his surprising voice and the religious musical repertoire.

One of the most special moments of the Cowboy Mass is the offertory. The tradition is made up of cowboys mounted on horses and clothes with traditional obligations, hats and leather boots, on the altar to offer work tools and foods that cultivated. It is also common to wear the leather hat for the donation collection.

The Cowboy Mass is organized by the Father João Câncio Foundation in collaboration with the Town Hall of Serrita, but the institution and the government have had clashes in recent years, mainly due to the city’s proposal to change the name of the event for Festa de Jacob, which the Foundation has opposed the cultural heritage.
