The goal is to reduce legal immigration to the country, which he made by obtaining visas, houses and citizens.
European governments have announced changes this year that make immigrants to enter their countries.
In the last two months, Italy and the United Kingdom have announced changes in the rules of procedures to obtain the visa of work, residence or citizenship. Already the government in Portugal has declared that he intends to send a project for the discussion in Parliament after the elections to be held on Sunday (18/05).
In the United Kingdom, Keir Stmerer Prime Minister promised that it will “significantly” make the number of immigrants who arrive in the country. In Italy, one of the objectives is to establish more accurate limits and “avoid abuse” such as “passport marketing”.
By announcing changes in the rules for obtaining Italian citizenship in March, the Italian vice-minister Antonio Tajani had sheets of paper with some advertisements from companies in Brazil specialized in obtaining Italian citizenship that even offered “Black Friday discount”.
Both in the case of Italy and the United Kingdom, the goal is to reduce legal immigration to the country, which has made it obtaining visas, houses and citizens.
Check below that it is happening with the rules of immigration to Italy, Portugal and the United Kingdom.
Italy
Italy has announced new rules in March for those who ask for Italian citizenship. The mator of new measures is already in force.
From now on, only people with at least one parent or one of the grandparents born in Italy can become citizens of that country.
Previously, there was no such generational limit: if the person interested in obtaining this documentation could prove to be a link with someone born in Italy after March 1861 (when the Kingdom of Italy was created), he was entitled to citizenship.
According to the Italian government, the goal is to “enhance the effective link between Italy and the resident of the city abroad”.
The changes will be adopted in two phases.
The first of these – which has already entered into force – provides that the descendants of the Italians who were born abroad will be automatically considered citizens alone two generations.
That is, from now on, only people with at least one parent or one of the Italian grandparents will be entitled to citizenship.
In the second phase of the project, which has already gained the green light of the Italian government, measures will be implemented for “citizens born and residing abroad to maintain real ties with Italy over time”.
These people will have to “exercise the rights and duties of citizens at least once every 25 years”.
This includes the vote, the renewal of the passport, the updating of the Italian identity card (teeth card) or the payment of taxes.
For Italian citizens born abroad, it is mandatory to record the birth certificate before completing 25 years. Otherwise, it will no longer be possible to request Italian citizenship.
The younger son of Italian citizens, if he was not born in Italy, can only acquire citizenship if he resides in Italy for at least two years, after a declaration of intention of the parents.
Those who are interested in obtaining Italian documents will no longer go to the consulates. There will be a “centralized special office” at the country’s foreign ministry, located in Rome.
The perspective is that this transition process until the creation of this office takes a year.
United Kingdom
The number that measures the movement for immigration to the country (entry of immigrants deducted from the definitive departure of British citizens) quadrupled between 2019 and 2023.
The criterion adopted by the government is to maintain the immigration of those who contribute most to economic growth, in particular to workers with major qualifications.
The government of the United Kingdom presented a bill to Parliament by modifying various criteria to obtain visas and residences in the country:
- Introduction of new English knowledge requirements for both the main candidates and their dependent people.
- For those who ask for British citizenship, the minimum period of residence has doubled at 10 years.
- More rigorous requirements for educational institutions to sponsor visas from international students. Graduates can remain in the United Kingdom only after studies for a period of 18 months.
- End of recruitment abroad for the opinions of people who work with social assistance.
- Increase in the requirements of qualified workers. In the words of the “qualified British government must mean qualified”. Immigration is limited to professions in which there is long -term scarcity. There will be “direct paths to the brightest global talents”.
- The government has promised greater rigidity in the analysis of complex family situations, in which employees receive views. According to the government, today there are many cases that are treated as “exceptional” rather than clear rules.
Portugal
Portugal is another country that studies by modifying its citizenship rules. Unlike the United Kingdom and Italy, in the case of Portugal, the proposals are still under analysis.
Portugal will lead the legislative elections on Sunday (18/05) and the PSD government party has warned that if it remains in power, it intends to send a project to Parliament to extend the deadline for immigrants to have the right to acquire Portuguese nationality.
The period required for residence in Portugal would go to 10 years.
There are no further details on the new deadline or on how the measure would be applied, but it is believed that it would affect thousands of Brazilians who currently live in Portugal.
In addition, this month, the Portuguese government has announced that it will notify 18,000 illegal immigrants to leave the country.
The presidential minister of the Portuguese government, António Leitão Amaro, said that immigrants who should leave the country had their requests for residence denied by the agency for integration, migration and asylum (Aima), after a period of analysis, for not having respected the local rules.
