The Bolivian police launch tear gas on Morales’ supporters who protest against the electoral ban

Tensions increased in the administrative capital of Bolivia, La Paz, on Friday, when the former president Evo Morales gathered in front of the electoral court, asking for their reintegration as a candidate in this year’s presidential race.

The Constitutional Court of Bolivia confirmed this week the decision of a lower court that prohibits the presidents from exercising more than two terms, in practice preventing Morales from running for what would be his fourth mandate.

There have been clashes between the demonstrators and the police, who launched tear gas and shot Paintball to disperse the crowd.

“Look what they are doing with us,” said the demonstrator Jorge Aduviri. “There are children here, elderly and pregnant women.”

Among the demonstrators, indigenous women knelt in a challenge, while others sang slogans against the current government.

Morales, a former indigenous farmer from Coca who led Bolivia for almost 14 years, left the suspected power in November 2019, after having candidate an unprecedented fourth term in an election marked by accusations of fraud.

“We have no money,” said the demonstrator Flora Quispe. “We want Evo to be President again!”
