Eight years ago, this talented director could have been one of the senior … but this thriller crushed his career with excellent casting

Sometimes it is enough to spoil one mistake of a promising career: it was the case of Swedish director Thomas Alfedson, who, after great success, met with his famous Norwegian detective novel.

Six years later, when he was shining with a spy triller with La Taupe, the filmmaker was truly attacked by a new project in 2017: the adaptation of the novel Le Bonhomme de Snow, signed by Nordic Thriller’s star Jo Nessbe. Unfortunately, this attempt ended with serious commercial discontent.

In 2008, thanks to Morse, a low vampire film that became worldwide success, then Alfredson attracted the attention of the film industry. Selected in more than thirty international festivals, which was awarded Gerardmer and appointed European Film Awards, as well as BAFTA, Walrus Chase it as a talent to protect it. Four years later he confirmed his virtue PhyroAdaptation of John Le Carrian cult novel, carried out by a five -star actress: Gary Oldman, Colin Firm, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong and John Hit. The film was greeted with as criticism as society.

After he has released, after 6 years, SnowThere were expectations of the industry. The film, originally led by Martin Scorsese, eventually trusted him. This chilled thriller was represented by Harry Hall, an emblem inspector Oj nesbøEleven novels recurrent hero. The book, the seventh series, met with great success, became the best seller in the United States, part of the New York Times list, as well as in the United Kingdom.

Bitter failure

But where Phyro Succeeded in his bet, Snow Frustrated on all fronts. And this, despite the impressive distribution, consisting of Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, JK Simmons, Charlotte Gainsbourg or Val Kilmer. The film, which was presented at the Preview in October 2017 at the Haifa International Film Festival, which was then distributed in theaters, was a widely ignored community that declared only $ 35 million against the budget worldwide. He was also deprived of criticism, which denied his “fragmented and incomprehensible” intrigue, as well as the lack of direction towards his main actors, which called it “clichĂ© and little attractive”.

Thomas AlfredsonThe Norwegian NRK Television responded that production was accelerated and poorly prepared and that his story had holes that he could not fill in because he could not shoot everything he could imagine.

“” “The time of our filming in Norway was very short. We didn’t have the whole story with us, and when we started editing, we found that many things were missing. It was as if you were doing a big puzzle and missing a few pieces so as not to see the whole table.»

He also rejected chaotic production: “This was done very unexpectedly – we learned that we had finally had the money and we could make a movie in London.»

After this fiasco, the director’s career seems to be stopped. His next film, Jönsson Gang, was discreetly released at Vod that they had not spoken. Some confidential short films later and next to it without international stars Thomas Alfredson Seems to have lost the impulse that has been worn since Walrus Sister Phyro.

For curiosity, the snow man is available in Vod. Just like taupe, if you recommend.
