Brazil investigates 2 cases of avian influenza in commercial farms, 4 in subsistence chickens

Brazil, the largest global exporter of chicken meat, studies two cases of avian influenza in commercial farms, one in tocantine and one in Santa Catarina, as well as four suspicions in the subsistence chickens, according to a monitoring system of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Attention to these investigations increased after the first high pathogenicity record in a commercial farm in Brazil last week in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, which led to commercial embargo from important importers of the Brazilian product.

In addition to this case, in a zoo in the city of Gaucho di Sapucaia do Sul, about 50 km from Montenegro, cases of avian influence were confirmed in wild aquatic birds last week -the country is susceptible to commercial embargo only when attention is paid to the commercial farm.

For the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, it is “normal” and important that these notifications and investigations occur, so that Brazil can recover as soon as possible the status of avian flu.

“People are even more vigilant, the same breeders, both by the fact and commercial or subsistence, when he saw a sick animal, warns, puts it in the system and is good,” said Fávaro to journalists on Monday.

Fávaro also declared that Brazil would be considered without avian influence if it did not record new cases in commercial farms within 28 days from the initial epidemic. This would not mean that exports would have resumed immediately, but Brazil would be able to negotiate the relaxation of the restrictions on exports triggered by the health protocols with buyers.

Considering the importance of Brazil for the global market, with Brazilian exports above 35% of the total, the authorities provide that China and other main consumers will soon flex the prohibitions imposed on the import of meat, provided that new outbreaks are not recorded.

The minister mentioned the interview on Monday the investigations on Tocantins and another in chickens of subsistence in Sergipe.

“The animal has fallen ill, the relationships in the system, quickly goes to the inspection, the technicians go there. If there is no correlation of suspicions with the disease, similar to the aviary influence, it already lashes out with the face,” he observed.

The Ministry investigates commercial farms in the city of Aguiarnópolis (A) and Ipsumir (SC). The subsistence chicken investigations take place in Triunfo (RS), Nova Brasilândia (MT), Gracco Cardoso (Se), Salitre (CE).
