The series “Rensga Hits!”, Which will air its first two episodes on Globo’s “Cinema Especial”, this Wednesday (8/3), arrives with the ambition of transforming the female protagonist in the universe of country music into a plot for television.
Produced for the streaming platform Globoplay, the attraction intends to bring many hits and unreleased tracks, as well as stories drawn from the lyrics of the great hits of “feminejo”.
“The idea was to create a story that mirrored the successes sung by women: having fun, getting drunk, crying over the loss of love … We also wanted to show other faces of Brazil, show Goiânia as this power of music “, explained producer Carolina Alckmin (” De Volta aos 15 “) about the inspiration for the project, in an interview with the newspaper O Globo.
Written by Renata Corrêa (“Silêncio da Chuva”), the plot follows Raíssa (Alice Wegmann, from “Onde Nascem os Fortes”), a young country woman who travels to the big city with the intention of becoming a singer. She starts doing small shows in a restaurant, but soon discovers that one of her compositions of hers has been stolen and recorded by another singer, Gláucia (Lorena Comparato, from “Impuros”), which starts a rivalry between the two.
For the role, Wegmann was based on Marília Mendonça (who originally would have participated in the attraction, but ended up dying sooner), going so far as to study her way of speaking and singing. “My character in ‘Rensga Hits!’, Raíssa, has always been a tribute to her in her life. Our biggest reference and inspiration,” wrote the actress on Instagram.
In the third episode of the series the “queen of suffering” is mentioned as a reference.
But the starting point of Raíssa’s story has another narrative pretext: the discovery that her boyfriend has a lover and a son. It is the old story of infidelity, so widespread in popular hits – such as “Infiel”, by the aforementioned Marília Mendonça -, with the right to other typical details. The character leaves her boyfriend at the altar, in the countryside, and takes his old car to go to Goiânia in search of her dream.
“There’s nothing like a car horn to turn your life around, right? It’s the best push anyone can get,” joked Alice Wegmann of the character.
Despite taking on the tone of comedy, the plot addresses serious issues such as machismo and the difference in pay between men and women, feminist issues that gain even greater projection in the sertanejo universe. In addition, the series will also feature something rare in this small world: a pair of black singers.
In the plot, Jeniffer Dias (“Amor de Mãe”) plays the singer Thamyres, who is paired with her brother Theo (Sidney Santiago, from “Second Chamada”).
“They are a black country duo, I’ve never seen them before,” he said. “I’m from Rio, of samba, one day they asked me: ‘Who do you love in the country, who is your reference?’ .
In his quest for the role, Dias spoke to the Barbosa sisters and studied the work of singers such as Cascatinha and Inhana, Rick and João Paulo. The few examples he could find reflect a systemic problem.
“The series that brings a black country duo is a way to subvert this, to make it change in some way,” believes the actress.
Also, he praises his character development. “Thamyres reminds me a lot of the strength and sensitivity of women who, despite adversity, somehow managed to recover”.
Another who highlighted her character’s strength was actress Fabiana Karla (“De Perto Ela Não é Normal”), who plays Helena, the owner of a record company on the series.
“She is an extremely strong woman, her goal in life is to be successful. She surpasses all others and, in the eyes of others, she is a machine. She has a very successful and luxurious life. ‘Inside’, and Helena has brought strength, courage, “he told Globo.
The production also features Deborah Secco (“Salve-se Quem Puder”), Stella Miranda (“Carnaval”), Guida Vianna (“Valentins”), Maurício Destri (seen in a recent clip by Manu Gavassi), Alejandro Claveaux (“Coisa Mais Linda”), and also marks the return of Lúcia Veríssimo to the screen, eight years after “Amor à Vida” (2013). And to get into the spirit of the characters, they all spent three months in Goiânia.
The preparation was intense, with singing and accent lessons, and meetings with important people from this universe. Alice Wegmann, for example, had never sung professionally. “Singing is my place of vulnerability, I feel naked. For my birthday in 2020, Francisco Gil [músico e neto de Gilberto Gil] he gave me a guitar and encouraged me to play and sing, but I did it at home, “he explained.
The songs he will present are compositions by the duo Bibi and Dudu, who have already worked with names such as Michel Teló and Gusttavo Lima.
Wegmann imagines that the combination of all these factors will be able to produce great success – if not in music, on television. “‘Rensga Hits!’ communicates with all of Brazil, with the whole family, with anyone who loves music. It is a series that goes through all the emotions in a very funny way and Brazil needs to laugh a little, “he points out.
Following the airing of the first two episodes, directed by Leandro Neri (“Socorro, I became a girl!”) And Carolina Durão (“A Vila”), the series will be available weekly on Globoplay. On Thursday, fans will be able to follow the first four chapters on the streaming platform.
