Cinemathe Last of Us: screenwriter says story should be completed in season 4

Craig Mazin states that the third season will be bigger, but not enough to end the narrative started in the Games

*SPOILER ALERT**

In an interview with the site Colliderthe screenwriter and showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that The Last of Usseries of HBOmust have Four seasons to complete the game based on games. The statement addresses creators planning to adapt The Last of US Part IIgame released in 2020, in more than one season.

“I think there is a good chance that season three will be longer than the second, simply because the form of this narrative and the opportunities it offers is a little different,” Mazin explained.

According to the creator, the impact of Joel’s death and the complexity of the story prevented the outcome from fitting in just another season. The third should be larger than the second, but still insufficient to end the arc.

“The problem with Joel’s death is that she is so impactful. It’s such a narrative bomb that it’s hard to get away from it. We can’t really take a break and get away to make a story of Bill and Frank.”

According to Mazin, the natural path will even be to divide the adaptation into three parts – including a fourth season as a closure.

“Certainly, there is no way to complete this narrative in a third season. I hope we earn enough to go back and finish it in a fourth. This is the most likely result. ”

He also reinforced the team’s care to avoid inconsistencies between the following episodes and seasons:“We always think about the future. We think of the future for the 3rd and 4th seasons, to try to get as much visibility as possible, so as not to end up in a situation where we sit and went into details about a season and then we thought, ‘Wow, if that person had not said that speech, or was in that place, or used that jacket, that would be much cooler.”

“With this season, it was, ‘Ok, this source material goes far beyond a season.”

The second season of The Last of Us premiered in 2025 and adapts part of the story of The Last of US Part II.

“Now, in fact, we are in a more traditional suspense mode,” said Mazin. “You tell a story and finish the season with something that says, ‘Wow, it will change a lot of things, and see you when we go back and continue from there’.”

The final episode of the second season will air next Sunday, with aired HBO and streaming in Max.
