Photos shared by Jason Momoa last Friday (7/29), who captured his reunion with actor Ben Affleck behind the scenes at Warner Bros. studios, got an explanation. In a report on the cancellation of the “Batgirl” premiere, The Hollywood Reporter mentioned a decrease in Michael Keaton’s role in the studio’s new films.
Originally, Keaton was supposed to reappear as Batman in “The Flash,” but the serial confusion organized by actor Ezra Miller, who plays the hero, forced Warner to postpone the premiere of the production.
Witnesses heard by the publication claim that Keaton also filmed a cameo in “Aquaman 2” (or “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom”). Originally, the film was supposed to hit theaters after “The Flash”, but the order ended up being reversed. Realizing the public confusion about the identity of the new Batman, during the test screenings, Warner would have decided to remove the actor and replace him with Affleck.
Keaton would have even more prominence in “Batgirl”, serving as a mentor to the heroine played by Leslie Grace. But the production was completely scrapped.
Now, the 1989 Batman interpreter will only be seen in “The Flash”, which risks keeping “Batgirl” company in Warner’s locked files.
The fact is that the postponement of the speedster film and the cancellation of the Gotham heroine production changed the entire original schedule of DC Films, which intended to replace Affleck with Keaton after “The Flash”. The idea was to make the actor’s Batman responsible for linking future DC movies, just as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury did with the Marvel productions culminating in “The Avengers” in 2010.
Until further notice, Ben Affleck continues to be the Batman of the DCU (DC Cinematic Universe) movie, regardless of the success of the hero’s new solo film starring Robert Pattinson.
