Buzz Lightyear: Where does the line “to infinity and beyond” come from?

C-siteartoonBrew Storyboards for a deleted scene from Buzz Lightyear have just been released. Titled “Meet Izzy”, the series features Izzy, the grandson of Commander Alicia Hawthorne, who meets Buzz when he is only 7 years old. In the film, Buzz meets the character when he comes of age.

Director Angus McClain explains at the start of the video: “We couldn’t figure out how to fit the first act and keep the rhythm going. (…) In the first part, Alisha’s character needed more time, so we had to remove this scene.”

The scene in question depicts a young Izzy as she meets Buzz for the first time. A child knocks on the door of the hero, who is reading while his robot cat Sox sleeps next to him.

When the little girl sees the animal, she can’t avoid it and it starts growling, a noise the ranger doesn’t know. The scene was also used in the movie, but with an adult Izzy.

Count to infinity and beyond

The little girl then proudly tells Buzz that her brother Maurice can count to infinity, stating:So I will learn to count more“. to which Baz replies: “In fact, you cannot go beyond infinity, it is mathematically impossible“. an amendment that doesn’t please Izzy, who claims it’s a base that’s mathematically impossible.

So viewers will appreciate the childish portrayal, as we know the “to infinity and beyond” tirade will become Buzz Lightyear’s trademark.

If the origin of the replica is not ultimately in the film, it is at least explained. This is a phrase that Buzz and Alisha say together, followed by a gesture.

The bond between Izzy and Moe

This sequence also tells us that there was basically a bond between Izzy and Moe, two members of the Zap Patrol. Angus McClain explains: “You’ll notice that Maurice is actually Izzy’s brother. We were looking for a way for Izzy to represent the family“.

This scene would add a fatherly bond between Buzz and the two members of the Zap Patrol, and give Buzz something he never could due to his desperate need to right his wrongs: a family.

By removing this sequence, the director and team chose to leave the entire stretch of the filmorigin story An explanation of the fly and in particular this phrase that has become iconic.

Although Buzz Lightyear contains references to the line that supports the toy’s use in Toy Story, this scene proves the origin of the phrase in a much more definitive way.

Also note the presence on this scenario board of a Toy Story reference that was not included in the final version. Young Izzy is wearing a T-shirt with a picture of an alien. With a presence that would also explain the origin of the fan fights in the original saga, as Buzz Lightyear was supposed to happen before John Lasseter started the franchise in 1996.
