Carlota Joaquina, Princess of Brazilmilestone of the resumption of Brazilian cinema in the 1990s, it turns 30 in 2025 and returns to theaters in a remastered copy, reaffirming its current and creative power.

Carlota Joaquina, Princess of Brazil, speaks lightly from a country erected about privileges, convenience agreements and power relations – themes that, unfortunately, still echo in our reality. The film reaffirms itself as a provocative portrait of our history, but also as a sometimes uncomfortable mirror of the present.

The director celebrates not only the 30th anniversary of the film, but also the opportunity to see her first work as director back to the big screen: “It is a deep emotion to know that my first feature will meet the audience in the cinema. Reviewing him today, I realize that he keeps pulsating with surprising force. The criticism and satirical tone, which were already bold at the time, may be even more understood by the new generations. It will be beautiful to see young people, teachers and families discovering – or reviewing – the movie in the cinema, which is still the ideal space for the collective experience of art. ”

What is it about?

The narrative takes place between the late eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century. At the age of ten, Carlota Joaquina is promised to João, from Portugal. Talented and educated, the young princess is approved by the Spanish court and sent to Lisbon, where she comes across a much less glamorous destination than portrayed in the nobility’s paintings and protocols. John, of introspective temperament, prefers the sacred singing and the cultivation of flowers to the company of the new wife.

With the death of the heir prince and the aggravation of the mental health of Queen D. Maria I, the couple ends up elevated to the Portuguese throne. Amid the turbulence caused by the French Revolution and the threats of Napoleonic invasion, the Portuguese court holds a historic and silent escape to Brazil-an episode that marks a turnaround in the destination of the colony and gives rise to a new phase of Luso-Brazilian history.
