Cinemao film that the extermination director would never do today, according to himself

The British Director Danny Boyleresponsible for titles as Extermination (2002) and the recent Extermination: Evolutionthe franchise’s third feature, said it would not make one of the great successes of his career today. In an interview with The Guardian, Boy reflected on the cultural and ethical transformations that would make the project unfeasible in the present times.

“Wouldn’t we be able to do who wants to be a millionaire? now. And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all this. We need to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the brand we leave in the world”Said the filmmaker.

Today, however, Boy He recognizes that his approach, albeit well-meaning, would be seen from a different prism. Asked if the project could be interpreted as an example of cinematic colonialism, he responded with uncomfortable sincerity: “No, no… Well, just in the sense that everything is. At the time, it looked radical. We took just a few people from the team to Mumbai, worked with a large Indian team and tried to make the film within the local culture. But in the end, we were still foreigners. It is a flawed method.”

For the director, the context has changed. “This kind of cultural appropriation can be accepted at certain times. In others, no. I am proud of the movie, but today I would not consider doing something like that. We couldn’t even get funding. Even though I was involved, I would look for an Indian filmmaker to drive.”

The statements of Boy gain relevance amid rumors about a possible continuation or television adaptation of Who wants to be a millionaire?which was being developed by Swati Shetty’s (former Netflix) and Grant Kessman (former CAA) producer Bridge7. Faced with the director’s self -criticism, his participation in these new projects seems unlikely.

Launched in 2008, Who wants to be a millionaire? narrates the story of Jamal (Dev Patel, Primitive fury), a young man of humble origin on the periphery of Mumbai, who finds in the popular question and answers program an unexpected chance to change his life. The production, based on the novel Q & A of Vikas Swarup and scripted by Simon Beaufoyhe won eight Oscars in 2009, including best film and best director, and became a global phenomenon for his mix of social drama, romance and contemporary fable.
