The Dutch driver now has three wins in the season and 116 points, against 108 by Alexander Dunne
Sunday morning (29), Formula 2 performed his race in Austria and who shone was the Dutch Richard Verschor. With a solid and strategic performance, the pilot won his third victory in the season and, in short, took command of the championship.
The race had Leonardo Fornaroli starting from pole position, but in the first curves the Italian came under pressure. While Fornaroli made a good start, Victor Martins, who shared the front row, had a bad start and lost his position in Verschor, who jumped to second place.
The race began with a strong rhythm and some mechanical problems. Gabriele Minì faced the failures of the engine, who even loose the smoke, forcing his abandonment on the first laps – a weekend to forget to Italian, who had already been involved in an accident on the Sprint on Saturday. Rosa Miyata and Amaury Cordel also abandoned the defects in their cars.
Victor Martins tried to recover by betting on a undercut during the mandatory rubber change stops. For a moment, the strategy seemed to work, since the Frenchman had a better rhythm than Verschor after leaving the boxes.
On the 27th lap, Cian Shields also abandoned and Joshua Dürksen, after getting out of the bottom of the platoon, could not react and exceed the finish line only 15th – another frustrating result for Aix races.
With nine shifts until the end, the leaders at that time, Kush Maini and Sebastian Montoya, had not yet done their stops and had ended up going to the pits. With this, Verschoor resumed the command, closely followed by Alexander Dunne.
In the last few moments, the dispute for third place has warmed up between Martins, Fornaroli and Josep Maria Martí. In an aggressive maneuver, Martí touched Martins’s back, causing an imbalance. Fornaroli took advantage of the situation to resume third position. Martí was punished by the accident and ended in seventh place.
Richard Verschor won the race constantly, with Alexander Dunne to the second and Fornaroli, who started from the pole, completing the podium in third place. The victory meant that the Dutch driver took command of the championship with 116 points, 8 more than Alexander Dunne.
The category will return next weekend, with the Silverstone phase. The race will be broadcast live on Bandsports.
