How much does Homer Simpson earn at the nuclear plant? It’s less than you think

Thanks to the internet, things from The Simpsons have been theorized and discovered, like the true meaning of the phrase “speak louder, I’ve got a towel.” Now, a new mystery surrounding Homer also seems to have been cleared up.

From the beginning of the animated series created by Matt Groening, Homer has a job at the Springfield Nuclear Plant as a safety inspector.

Although he has quit and returned to Mr. Burns’ company several times, it has never been explicitly stated how much Homer earns from his job in the 7G department of the factory.

But a scene from chapter 23 of the seventh season seems to clear up this mystery and even gives an answer as to how the Simpson family can travel, have adventures and incur big expenses without apparent concern.

How much does Homer Simpson earn at the nuclear plant?

In the chapter titled “Much Apu About Nothing”, which aired on May 5, 1996, Apu is at risk of deportation, but Homer takes pity on him and helps him become a legal citizen. .

The episode also has a story about a bear wandering the streets of Springfield. To prevent it from happening again, Mayor Diamante creates a tax to fund an anti-bear patrol.

As a result of this tax, at one point in the chapter Homer receives his salary for working at the nuclear plant and the exact details of what is deducted for taxes and his final salary are shown.

According to what has been proven, for 40 hours of work Homer earns $362.19 a week at Springfield Power Company, already with the corresponding deductions for taxes.

So Homer Simpson’s full salary in 1996 before taxes is $479.60, which translates to $11.99 an hour and $24,395.80 a year.

As of 2009, the federal minimum wage in the United States has remained at $7.25 an hour, although every state has increased it, and in some, such as California, it is as high as $15 an hour.

Homer’s 1996 salary of nearly $12 an hour wasn’t that high. Adjusting for current inflation, you could earn almost twice as much, but it’s still low for the United States.

How do the Simpsons pay for all their stuff?

There is a theory that the Simpsons have no financial worries because Homer receives a steady income outside of his job at the Nuclear Plant.

The theory posted by Awkwardhipsters on Reddit recalls that in episode 2 of season eight, Hank Scorpio’s character gives Homer the Denver Broncos football team.

As this equipment was not what Homer wanted, the gift is never mentioned again in the series and it is believed that Homer sold much of his stock.

But since the episode aired (November 1996) the Broncos have won three Super Bowls and are a multi-million dollar franchise, so by keeping a small percentage of the stock, Homer would be getting paid steadily.
