The President of the European Commission survives the vote of trust of the Parliament

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, survived a vote of no confidence in the European Parliament on Thursday, presented mainly by far -right legislators who said that she and her team undermine the EU through illegal actions.

As expected, the motion did not get the majority of two thirds necessary to approve. Only 175 members of Parliament supported the motion, while 360 voted against and 18 abstentions.

The Romanian nationalist Gheorghe Pipera, the main sponsor of the motion, has criticized, among other things, the refusal of the Committee to advertise text messages between Von der Leyen and the executive president of the Pfizer vaccine manufacturer during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The decision -making process has become opaque and discretionary and generates fears of abuse and corruption. The cost of the obsessive bureaucracy of the European Union, such as (combat) climatic, was enormous,” Pipera said to Parliament on Monday.

During the debate on his leadership, Von der Leyen defended his story in Parliament, rejecting the criticisms of his pandemic management and affirming that his approach ensured the same access to vaccines throughout the EU.

Although the motion of censorship had little successful possibilities, it was a political headache for Von der Leyen, since his commission negotiates with the government of the President of the United States Donald Trump to try to avoid high US commercial tariffs on EU products.

It was the first time since 2014 that a president of the Committee faced such a motion. The then president Jean-Claude Juncker survived the vote.
