In real life, Johnson and Malcolm X retained a friendship dating from the 1940s, when Malcolm X was a small street crook. Johnson also provided Malcolm X when he divorced the leaders of the nation of Islam in 1964, but Malcolm X told Johnson that he was not good for his image, that both of them were associated with each other and that the feathers left their guards. Two weeks later, Malcolm X was killed by members of the nation of Islam.
