Prehistoric tombs in Sardinia are now a World Heritage Site

The Domus of Janas, Sardinia, southern Italy, were recognized as a world heritage of humanity. The announcement of the 61st Italian archaeological site on the UNESCO list was made on Saturday (12), keeping Belpaese as the country with the greatest number of inclusions.

The decision was made today by the World Heritage Committee, collected in Paris, during the 47th session, which enrolled the “funeral traditions in the prehistory of Sardinia: the Janas domus” in Unesco recognizing their “exceptional universal value”.

Known as “Fairy Houses”, the candidacy for the humanity of these prehistoric tombs was promoted by the Cesim Sardegna association and the municipal network of Domus de Janas, based on the third criterion of the 1972 convention, referring to the unique and exceptional testimony of a lost cultural tradition, connected to the cult of death, developed by the pre-histor communities of the island.
