“Intensive” preparation of Johnny Depp
Adapted from Hunter S. Based on Thompson’s novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Wild Journey into the Heart of the American Dream, published in 1972, Las Vegas Parano is Terry Gilliam’s tenth feature film. This crazy comedy starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro tells the story of a trip to Las Vegas about a journalist and his lawyer who keep themselves going through a frenzy of drug use.
This story, which marked the beginning of “gonzo journalism,” is directly inspired by Hunter S. with Thompson’s story. The latter quickly became friends with the actor who plays his cinematic alter ego, namely Johnny Depp. And he didn’t do things by halves to prepare for his role.
In addition to observing his model through videos or meetings organized by the producer, Johnny Depp actually settled in Hunter S. Thompson for four months. During this stay, the actor learned to shoot a pistol at the cans at the bottom of the garden.
Also, most of Johnny Depp’s clothes in the movie actually belong to Hunter S. Thompson, who shaved the actor’s hair himself! The friendship between the actor and the novelist was such that it was Johnny Depp who was responsible for Hunter S. To fulfill Thompson’s last wishes, after his suicide in 2005.
Although Las Vegas Parano was a commercial failure when it was released in 1998, the feature film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, has become a cult film.
Las Vegas Parano leaves the Netflix catalog on August 15.
