Italy imposes the code for influencers with fines of 250 thousand euros

Standards should be followed by “significant” influencers

Italy approved on Thursday (24) a code of conduct that must be followed by digital influencers of the country.

The rules authorized by Massimiliano Capitanio, a commissioner of the communications regulation authority, will apply to “significant” influencers, that is, which have more than 500,000 followers or more than one million points of view in their content.

“The goal is to provide simple rules and directly applicable to content creators in order to protect their profession and users. These professionals are comparable to television broadcasters and therefore have full editorial responsibility,” said Capitanio.

Among the rules that should be followed by influencers on social networks are the sharing of accurate and impartial information, respect for human dignity, the fight against hatred, the protection of minors and transparency in commercial communications.

Failure to comply with the rules of the Italian Code of Conduct, according to the regulation body, can lead to fines of 250 thousand euros (1.6 million dollars) up to 600 thousand euros (3.8 million dollars).

“This is a crucial step to establish a new balance between freedom of expression, user rights and responsibilities of digital breeders. A modern and sensible measure that appreciates the profession and protects users,” he said. .
