First film adaptation of the team, the fantastic quartet was never officially released and survived thanks to fans
Before Marvel overproductions dominate the world’s box office, an attempt almost forgotten to adapt the Fantastic quartet For cinema marked the history of pop culture. Produced by Roger Corman (The Horrors Store) and directed by Oley Sassone (Ritual of a Killer), the 1994 feature was never officially released and that was no coincidence.
Filmed between December 1992 and January 1993 with an estimated budget between $ 1 million and $ 1.5 million (about 8.2 thousand reais, according to the current dollar quotation), the film was commissioned by the producer Bernd Eichingerfrom Constantin Film, with a single goal: Maintain the film rights of the characters with Marvel. If the production was not started by the end of that year, the rights would return to the publisher.
Even with limited features and a tight schedule, the film was finished. In the cast were Alex Hyde-White (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) as Reed Richards, Rebecca Staab (The high voltage detonator) As Sue Storm, Jay Underwood (The invisible boy) playing Johnny Storm, Michael Bailey Smith (The spicy – sending to see!) like Ben Grimm and Joseph Culp (Possessed) in the role of villain Doctor Destiny. The feature presented the origin of heroes, their transformation during a space mission and the initial confrontation against destination, all in a light, almost naive tone, aimed at young people.
During post-production, trailers were screened in movie theaters and the cast was told to promote the film at events and conventions such as Comic-Con and a planned premiere for Mall of America. However, shortly before release, those involved received orders to suspend any disclosure. The film was shelved and the negative, according to behind -the -scenes reports, would have been bought by Avi Arad (At the time, Marvel Executive) and destroyed to protect the brand image before a more ambitious adaptation in the future.
Although it was never officially launched, The Fantastic Four of 1994 survived in geek culture thanks to pirate copies distributed in VHS, unauthorized DVDs and uploads on platforms like Youtube. Many fans began to see the project as a piece “cult”, for fidelity to the spirit of comics and the curious story behind their creation.
In 2015, the documentary Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four He plunged behind the scenes of the production, revealing, among other things, that the cast did not even know that the movie would not be released.
