Many cats have had important roles or memorable appearances in movies. It even happens that they can be at the center of the plot and even appear in the title of the film, as happened in 1996 in “Everybody’s Looking for Their Cat” by Cedric Klapisch. More recently, it’s another cat that was also a stooge in the Coen brothers’ Llewyn Davis. A small ginger cat, played by the hero of the film, Oscar Isaac, must be taken care of, who inadvertently lets him escape from the apartment that is occupied, and then must go in search of him on the streets of New York.
It also happens that cats in movies are much less cute and friendly. We remember Blofeld’s white cat, the leader of the Specter and the iconic enemy of James Bond, parodied in Austin Powers, then a companion of Dr. Hale. And of course, we think of the scariest, Church, the cat back from the dead in Simetier, adapted from the novel by Stephen King.
But in cinema, cats are most often in animated films, and they are very numerous. From the Duchess and her three kitties, Marie, Toulouse and Berlioz in the Disney classic The Aristocats, to the famous boot-wearing Garfield who appeared in Shrek 2 and had his own spin-off in 2011.
