There are many easter eggs in “The Umbrella Academy 3” that few noticed, but one very important aspect that also went unnoticed had to do with one of the main characters of the Netflix series: Viktor Hargreeves.
In the third season of “The Umbrella Academy,” Elliott Page’s character was revealed as a transgender man, to match the actor’s real-life transition in December 2021.
“White Violin” grew up under the name Vanya Hargreeves from his early years, but in recent episodes he began to feel better about himself and after much meditation told his brothers that his real name was Viktor Hargreeves.
Although the show’s creators couldn’t predict Elliot Page’s real-life transition, there are several clues throughout “The Umbrella Academy” that could indicate that Victor Hargreaves’ true identity has always been that of a transgender man.
Viktor Hargreeves was not comfortable with the gender role that was imposed on him
Despite his feminine upbringing, when Victor was able to take charge of his own life and was away from his father’s constant surveillance, he adopted a style of dress considered more masculine.
The most powerful member of the Umbrella Academy has never been comfortable in skirts, dresses and blouses, preferring to wear baggy shirts and jeans. unlike her sister Alison, who even started a career in modeling and acting.
Viktor Hargreeves’ first romantic relationship had a hidden secret
In the first season of the Netflix series, Viktor began a relationship with Leonard Peabody, who was actually Harold Jenkins, an assassin who wanted to activate Viktor’s powers to use against Umbrella’s heroes.
Harold was able to manipulate Victor into showing him some affection as he had never known true love. Umbrella’s number seven fell in love with the villain very quickly, which could be explained by her “envy” of being a man. Although Jenkins was a simple guy, Victor loved him not only because he was good, but also because he was a reflection of the man he wanted to be.
In the third season of the Netflix series, “White Violin” wears neutral-colored clothing, hoods and short hair with bangs, a look very similar to that of the killer.
Relationship with Sissy Cooper changed Victor in ‘The Umbrella Academy’
After the trauma of his first love, Victor meets Sissy Cooper and her family in 1963. The relationship between the hero and the Coopers began as a friendship, as Victor took care of Harlan, a boy with autism, while spending the day talking with Sissy..
Over time this relationship changed as Victor and Sissy discovered they had romantic feelings for each other. From that moment on, Victor’s behavior was more “manly”, even with Sissy’s husband, as he was overly jealous of his guest.
If Victor had lived in 1963, he might have become Sissy’s partner and Harlan’s father. In fact, in the third season of the series, number 7 of the Umbrellas took on a fatherly role with Sissy’s son, despite the fact that he was already an adult several decades older than him.
Victor’s relationship with his father was never good.
“The Umbrella Academy”
Reginald Hargreaves was a bad father to all the members of the Umbrella Academy, but even more so to Victor. The millionaire feared the powers of the number seven, so he hid them from him and kept him locked in one of the rooms of his mansion, to force him to suppress his abilities.
Victor’s childhood could be interpreted as an analogy to what some transgender people suffer, who are often oppressed by their family members and forced to hide their true identity from the world.
Ultimately, Victor was not only able to show off his powers, but he was also able to be okay with himself coming out as a trans man.
The transition of Viktor Hargreeves was no surprise
for the children from the umbrella academy
In the first episode of season 3, Viktor Hargreeves decides to identify as a trans man, but shows that he fears the reaction of his brothers, especially men.
Fortunately, they avoid making much of the news and see it as completely normal, since to them Victor has always been their brother. The even number 5, the biggest of all, congratulated him for finally giving importance to his true identity.
