The information, shared with great joy by The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek, in the letter to investors, also marks the first time that a competitor surpasses Netflix in terms of paying users.

With 220.67 million subscribers, Netflix is now in second place in the ranking, after losing almost 1 million customers in the last quarter (a number considered positive, given the platform’s expectations). Disney, meanwhile, appears in first place with 152 million subscribers on Disney +, 22.8 million on ESPN + and 46.2 million on Hulu, for a total of 221 million.

Mickey’s company, however, has even bigger plans. Despite lowering expectations after losing the rights to broadcast cricket matches in India (one of its largest markets), it predicts that by the end of September 2024, on Disney + alone, it will have between 215 and 245 million viewers. .

In the second quarter of the year, Disney earned $ 1.09 adjusted earnings per share, a 36% increase from the prior year. Likewise, the results were positive for its overall revenue, which closed at $ 21.5 billion, a 26% increase from 2021.

Changes in values and new plans

In addition to the novelty, Disney also shared the intention to change the values and create new plans for Disney +, the streaming service that is the flagship of the company.

At least in the US, this December, the ad-free plan will see a 38% increase, reaching a monthly subscription of $ 10.99. On the other hand, a plan with advertising will also be launched in December. The package will cost $ 7.99 per month, the same price as the current ad-free version.

The announced measures aim to maintain and expand the streaming audience, attracting customers who are not yet part of the company’s catalog.
