Director Mareike Engilhardt’s debut feature is inspired by real reports and reveals the backstage of Daesh’s Brides Houses
The French Drama Revenue – The wives of the Islamic Statefirst feature of the director Mareike Engelhardtarrives in Brazilian theaters this Thursday, August 21. Based on real testimonials from young European -recruited by the Islamic State, the film addresses the mechanisms of enticing, indoctrination and control of women in the interior of the Caliphate. What is the story about?
The protagonist is Jessica (Megan Northam), 19 -year -old Frenchman who travels to Syria believing he is starting a new life. In Raqqa, the capital of Daesh, it is taken to a “Madafa” – houses where single women or widows are waiting to marry combatants – and is called to be called Revenue. The space is rigorously controlled by Madame (Lubna Azabal, Fires), character inspired by or Adam, one of the most feared female leaders in the jihadist group.
With script signed by Engelhadt and Samuel Douxthe feature combines journalistic research and fictional construction. The director interviewed former Islamic State members and accompanied judgments in Paris to build the narrative in the form of Huis Clos (closed environment), where the transformation of the character reflects the internal processes of radicalization, submission and loss of identity.
