The President of the Government of Argentina Javier Milei suffered a legislature on Thursday after the Senate rejected a series of presidential decrees and budgetary increases approved for public universities.
Milei has tried to control inflation in the country with rigorous austerity and blocking any laws that the congress, controlled by the opposition, can approve and influence state finances.
The senators approved the financing of national universities, including an increase in the salaries of their employees. They also discussed an increase in the health budget through the declaration of a pediatric emergency for two years.
“The Argentine public university is part of our national identity and defending it is a decision for the future,” said Senator Alejandra Vigo of Peronian Opposition Alliance.
Milei said that he will vote the laws that involve an increase in budget allocations.
The Superior Council also rejected five presidential decrees that tried to reduce the state structure, a setback for the tax adjustment of Milei, who promoted since it came into office in December 2023.
The government, which has a minority both in the Senate and in the Chamber of Representatives, faced another legislative obstacle on Wednesday, when the opposition representatives obtained the votes necessary to cancel a veto that Milei imposed an increase in subsidies for the disabled.
“We faced a congress kidnapped by Kirchnerismo (Peronism), a congress that responds only to its interests,” Milei said previously in an event with corporate leaders.
“They reminded us of having only one legislative agenda, which is the failure of the national state,” he added.
