‘Marighella’ wins the Brazilian Grand Prix of Cinema after debut under attack

The film marghella was released consecrated at the ceremony of the 21st Brazilian Cinema Grand Prix, winning eight awards on the night of Wednesday 10 in Rio de Janeiro. Winner of the main trophy of the evening, as ‘Best film’ of the year, the feature film also earned Wagner Moura the award for ‘Best First Director’ and ‘Adapted Screenplay’, shared with Felipe Braga.

Seu Jorge, interpreter of Marighella, won the trophy as ‘Best actor’. The other production trophies were technical: “Photography”, “Art direction”, “Costume” and “Sound”.

The awards ceremony, held at the Cidade das Artes, in Barra da Tijuca, was presented by Silvero Pereira and Camila Pitanga in a festive atmosphere, with musical numbers, political supporters and several celebrities on the red carpet. The good mood reflected the event’s return to face-to-face format, following a virtual version during the pandemic.

Not surprisingly, the consecration of marghella has done justice to the film responsible for the new resumption of Brazilian cinema, in the post-pandemic cycle, which in November last year drew audiences to screening rooms. An important achievement was also the consecration of a film that premiered under attack by members of the federal government’s cultural areas, in response to the ideological maneuvers of the country’s cultural incentive structures.

The award for ‘Best Director’ overall went to Daniel Filho for The silence of the rain. The other awarded performers were Dira Paes (“Best Actress” for Venice), Rodrigo Santoro (“Best Supporting Actor” for 7 prisoners) and Zezé Motta (“Best Supporting Actress” for Doctor Gamma).

Among the awards by genre, Then I’m the crazy one was voted “Best Comedy”, Monica’s Gang – Lessons was the “Best Feature Film for Children”, Bob Spit – We don’t like people won “Best Animation” and The last forest won the “Best Documentary” category.

The Brazilian Academy of Film and Audiovisual Arts event also awarded series, such as Sun And Under pressure among the highlights.

The ceremony was broadcast live by Canal Brasil, Globoplay and the Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts channel on YouTube.
