Olivia Newton-John refused to be Sandy in “Grease”: this is how John Travolta convinced her

Olivia Newton-John’s film legacy is extensive, but her acting career was undoubtedly marked by her role in the 1978 film, Grease. However, the singer had turned down the role of Sandy Olsson and it was John Travolta who convinced her to do it.

Why Olivia Newton-John didn’t want to be Sandy in ‘Grease’?

When “Grease” writer Allan Carr approached Olivia Newton-John about playing the role of Sandy, the actress wasn’t sure she wanted to do it.

This was due, among other things, to the fact that Olivia had previously participated in another musical film, which was not a success. The actress revealed this on the ‘Mamamia’s No Filter’ podcast in 2018:

“I did a film in England in the 60s called ‘Tomorrow’, which was a musical and it wasn’t a big hit (…) So I was very nervous about doing another film, and especially a musical, because music , my career was taking off, so I had to be convinced because I didn’t want to make another mistake.”

Another reason why the actress refused to be Sandy Olsson in the film was that she did not feel comfortable playing such a minor character, because when she was offered the role, the singer was 29 years old, while the student was 17.

“I said (to John Travolta) ‘Well, you know what? I’m a little nervous about playing someone who’s 17’. I was 29 years old. And when I look back now, I don’t know what worried me.”

It should be noted that John Travolta, co-star of the film, was then 23 years old, which increased the doubts of Olivia Newton-John to accept the role.

The actress didn’t stop coming up with new excuses and reasons not to be a part of ‘Vaseline’, as she even appealed to her Australian accent not to appear in it:

“I thought of all the excuses in the world why I couldn’t play Sandy, and one of them was that I couldn’t do an American accent. So they called me back and said, “Okay, we’ll make you Australian.” And I think it worked really well for the role.”

How John Travolta convinced Olivia Newton-John to be Sandy in ‘Grease’

According to ‘Grease’ casting director Joel Thurm in an interview with ‘People’ on August 9, 2022, casting Olivia Newton-John as Sandy for ‘Grease’ was very easy. He himself confessed that the main person responsible for this decision was none other than John Travolta.

“John was already prepared and asked me, ‘What do you think of Olivia?’ I said, “She’s wonderful.” He said to me, “What do you think about her about Sandy? This is a great idea.” And once he said that, and that’s what John wanted, I stopped everything else.”

Even though the “Grease” crew was convinced they wanted Olivia to play the part, she was the only one who wasn’t sure about it.

“Everyone wanted Olivia here, but Olivia didn’t accept the offer. That’s the important thing to know.”

In 2018 in an interview with Mía Freedman on the “Mamamia’s No Filter” podcast, the actress confessed that John Travolta himself had to go to her door to convince her to be Sandy:

“John was sent to my house and this handsome man came walking down the street with these bright blue eyes and said, ‘You’re my choice.’ And he was very kind and calm, and we spent the day together and hung out with the animals.”

Despite the actor’s gesture to convince her, it wasn’t until she auditioned playing Sandy that she accepted the role:

“I think if we do a screen test and I can see that this can work, then I might consider it.” So they set up a screen test and that’s how everything fell into place.”

In this regard, Joel Thurm confessed to “People” that the fact that Olivia asked for a test before accepting the role only showed how intelligent the singer was:

“I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a case where an actor who was offered a role said, ‘I want to see myself before I say yes.’ But that’s how smart she was.”
