The actress received a call from the director and thought she would finally be called to star in one of his films, but the conversation went the other way.
Kirsten Dunst (Civil War) may be one of the most respected actresses of her generation — nominated for an Oscar, awarded at Cannes and works with Sofia Coppola (Marie Antoinette), Lars von Trier (Melancholy) and Jane Campion (Attack of the Dogs) — but even she is still in suspense when the phone rings.
In an interview with Vogue, Dunst revealed that he received a call from Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another) and thought that, finally, it would be his turn to join the world of cinematographer Magnolia and Licorice Pizza. “In my head I thought: I’m ready for my close-up, Mr. Anderson”, he said, laughing.
But the excitement was short-lived. The director wasn’t calling to offer a role, nor to discuss a mysterious project. “When we finally managed to talk, he wanted to talk about another actor I had worked with in the past.”, revealed Dunstbetween laughs. “I just thought: you know this is kind of cruel, right?”
Despite the cinematic misunderstanding, there are no hard feelings. Dunst still dreams of collaborating with Anderson and guarantees that, if the invitation comes, she would even do the test. “People say it’s ‘by invitation only’, but for the right director, anyone will audition. If Paul calls again, I’ll do it. Soon. And who cares? It’s even fun.”
The actress also remembers that he was the one who nominated her to Lars von Trier to Melancholyafter Penelope Cruz (Ferrari) gave up the role — a gesture that ended up yielding one of the best works of his career.
