The forum of hostage families, the main Israeli organization that brings together relatives of the hostages to Gaza, has launched an appeal for a massive demonstration of solidarity, in order to press pressure on the government to accept an agreement for the fire with Hamas.
The events began on Sunday (25), with the participants collected near the air base of Hatzerim, near Beersheba, in the south of the country, to ask Israeli cyclists to cease the bombing of the Gaza Strip and stop performing actions that can be considered war crimes.
Eight days ago, half a million Israelians had already gone to the street with the same request. The previous week, almost a million people mobilized with the same purpose, as reported RFI By the journalist Daniel Bensimon, a former Labor deputy.
Message to the government and the international community
The current journey of the protests, under the “Israel Mobitita” motto, began at 6:29, local time – just when the attack of 7 October 2023 began.
EFRAT, Activist of the Forum of the Hostage Families and Head of the Mobilization Request, explained to RFI that the goal is to send a frank message to the Israeli government and to the international community:
“The Israeli people want the liberation of all the hostages. An agreement is possible, but every day that passes endanger the hostages. We cannot let this opportunity escape,” Efrat said.
The forum also stated that “an absolute majority of the Israelis wants the return of our family members at home. The deliberate postponement of the signature of an agreement with their liberation contradicts the popular will and our fundamental values: mutual responsibilities and solidarity”.
Actions throughout the country
The program for the mobilization day included several actions across the country, such as roads and gears. The scheduled events were a march of mothers with children in trolleys asking for the end of the war, reading the names of the hostages in front of the houses of several ministers and, as a central point, the presence of demonstrators during the meeting of the security office.
The main event took place in Tel Aviv, where tens of thousands of people marched towards the so -called Praça Dos Hostilos to a great public act. There, the families reiterated their appeals per unit and asked the government to sign the agreement, put an end to the war and bring everyone back home.
Although there was no general call to the strike, the initiative has received significant support from different companies – in particular from the high -technology sector – and different public institutions, who authorized their employees to participate in the law.
In a declaration, the hostages of hostages accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “deliberately sabotage” the negotiations and to be “disconnected from reality”.
However, the Israeli journalist Daniel Bensimon expressed RFI Skepticism on the ability of this mobilization that alters the position of the government. He noticed that the previous gears, like almost a million people last week, did not cause change, describing Netanyahu as “fanatic, almost obsessive with this war”, determined to “stay in Gaza” and adamable in his policy.
The war in Gaza was triggered by an attack on Israel who caused the death of 1,219 people, mainly civilians, according to a survey based on the official number. The Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip caused at least 62,744 killed, even mainly civilians, according to data from the Ministry of Health of Gaza, considered reliable by the United Nations.
The Security Office discusses the resumption of negotiation
The Israeli security office will meet at night in Jerusalem, as announced on Monday by a spokesperson for the Prime Minister. According to local media, the meeting will face the possible recovery of negotiations that aim for a respite in Gaza. To the question from AFP, the spokesman for Benjamin Netanyahu, Omer Mantzour, did not specify the themes of the meeting.
The Security Office, chaired by Netanyahu, had already approved a plan in early August to take control of the city of Gaza and the safety of the entire Palestinian territory, with the aim of annihilating Hamas and release the hostages. Currently, the Israeli army prepares an offensive already announced in the city of Gaza.
However, last Thursday, Netanyahu ordered the opening of the negotiations to free the hostages “all” in Gaza. The decision was a response to a new truce proposal presented by the mediators – Egypt, Qatar and the United States – and accepted by the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas. Although Netanyahu has not explicitly mentioned the proposal, it provides for a 60 -day fire, associated with the liberation of the hostages.
