The Ministry of Defense of Japan announced on Friday (29) that will expand the military drones of Arsenal to face a “security environment that significantly”. Tokyo intends to use equipment to strengthen a coastal defense system called Shield, which combines missiles, drones and advanced sensors to protect Japanese territory from naval threats.

In recent years, the country has doubled military spending, which should reach 2% of the gross domestic product (GDP) until the tax year 2027-2028. The Ministry requested a budget of 8.8 trillion of Yen (equivalent to 51.3 billion euros) for the next tax year, which starts on April 1.

The amount exceeds the previous record of 8.7 Yen trillions, scheduled for the current year, which ends in March 2026. The new increase in the budget, according to a representative of the ministry in Tokyo, reflects the “security environment that deteriorates” around the archipelago, partly linked to tensions in the sea of China.

Japan, which hosts about 54,000 soldiers from the United States, also undergoes Washington’s pressure to strengthen their defense skills. The budget proposal includes a request for 313 billion yen (1.8 billion euros) for investments in autonomous, maritime and submarine autonomous vehicles.

The war in Ukraine highlighted the destructive power of drones and their growing role in modern conflicts. “It is necessary to adapt to significant changes in the way the armies fight,” said the defense representative.

During a visit to Istanbul in early August, the defense minister Gen Nakatani agreed to study the possibility of buying Turkish drones, according to the Japanese press. Tokyo also strengthens his military alliance with Washington to make the forces of the two more reactive countries in the face of threats as a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

Eighty years after the Second World War and the atomic attacks of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese Constitution still limits military skills to defensive measures.

The country began to approve the changes to its defense strategy in 2022. The main measures at the time were the increase in the defense budget at 2% of GDP by 2027, the acquisition of long -range missiles (such as Tomahawk from the United States), the counterattack capacity against external threats and strengthening the military presence on Taiwan.

Exports

Japan, who tries to expand his arms exports, won this month an attempt to provide 11 frigates to the Australian Navy, in a contract equivalent to $ 6 billion. The budget proposal will be analyzed by the Ministry of Finance. The government should develop, in the coming months, a global proposal that could reach a record level.

According to the Japanese newspaper YomiuriThe total should exceed 122 trillion of Yen (711 billion euros), which represents a significant increase compared to the 117.6 trillions of the current year. Part of the resources will be intended for the care of the elderly and the management of the Japanese public debt, one of the largest among advanced economies.
