There is “broad support” in the EU for military training in Ukraine after respite, says Kallas

The defense ministers of the European Union expressed “broad support” to the expansion of the military training mission of the blockade to operate in Ukraine as part of the security guarantees in the event of ceased the fire, the main diplomat of Kaja Kallas said on Friday.

Kallas said that the ministers discussed the role of the EU in the security guarantees for Ukraine in a meeting in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, and that “Europe will fully pay its part”.

These guarantees aim to strengthen Ukrainian defenses and dissuade Russia from any future attack. Washington said that Europe must provide most of this effort.

“I welcome the welcome that today there has been a broad support to expand the mandate of our EU military mission to provide training and advice within Ukraine after any respite,” Kallas said to journalists.

“We are the largest training provider for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. So far we have trained over 80,000 soldiers and we must be ready to do more,” said Kallas.

“The ministers clarified that the security guarantees for Ukraine must be robust and reliable,” he added.

The effort of Ukraine and her allies to end the war produced little, despite the meetings of the President of the United States Donald Trump, this month with the Russian president Vladimir Putin and the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Russia has intensified air attacks in the Ukrainian villages and cities far behind the first line and has promoted an offensive in most of the East in an attempt to press Ukrainian to surrender to give territory.

A change in the mandate of the EU mission would require unanimity among the 27 EU member states, which may not be simple. Hungary has often blocked EU efforts to provide greater military support for Ukraine.

But Kallas claimed that extending the mission to Ukraine would be an important sign for the United States.

“We have to show how we take responsibility,” said Kallas.
