Pioneer in Europe, the German company adds sustainable label to steel

GMH GRANO sells a more expensive 100% line with clean energy

Special for Estadão – Few companies from the steel industry in Brazil enjoy the marketing of the term “green steel” or “sustainable steel” such as GMH GERMASCO GMH, pioneer in sustainability in this chain in Europe.

The term also seems contradictory, since the steel industry is one of the most polluting branches of the world economy. This is because, to transform the steel iron, hundreds of greenhouse gases are emitted, in particular carbon dioxide (CO2). The production of conventional steel is one of the most polluting industries, which represent between 7% and 11% of the global CO2 emissions.

Therefore, since 2016, the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) has created the sustainable steel project, according to which companies in the sector must reduce the amount of coal with which they feed the high furnaces that the iron is melted.

The pollutant fuel can be mistaken for electricity or coal, for example. Another way to reduce the impact of this sector is to use scrap instead of iron extracted. In Brazil, several companies already use Iron Velho in place of the mineral, according to the Brazil institute Steel, a representative entity of companies that produce Brazilian steel.

Among these, some units of ArceloMittal, Gerdau, Sinobras, Aperam, Avb and Vallourec. With the exception of AVB, which is called the Green Steel of Brazil and I wait – no one else uses the term “green steel”.

The company explores the label to the maximum

In Germany, however, being sustainable or green is the main position of GMH GRANS in the European market. The company explores this label to the maximum.

“We also have a premium line of green energy which is a steel made with 100% renewable electricity or sustainable wood coal that has zero carbon dioxide emissions for which we charge a price of about 5% above the market value,” says Luciana Finazzi, Brazilian director of sustainability and communication of the German company, based in Georgsmariehütte.

Although more sustainable, this green steel is still taxed in the same way by the United States of the conventional. But this does not prevent its “green” characteristic from opening new markets.

“We make steel through the circular economy with waste that we purchased from our customers, such as Volkswagen. We separated this iron and dissolved it in an electric oven and from there we make a new steel in the bars”, explains Luciana.

According to her, the “Green Steel” brand generates value for the product. “This question of” steel green “here (in Europe) Is stronger because there is a wider market for this. By 2050, all cars, for example, must also have CO2 neutral. So, in this way, we want to show our customers who have a much better steel than the high conventional sheet. And they want, they need this steel, “he says.
